Our Syllabus

In order for cadets to progress in the Air Training Corps, it is vital they learn how certain things work. Part of the ATC’s compulsory training is that cadets attain different levels in our academic qualifications, which is also required to participate in many cadet activities. For instance, to fly or glide the cadet must have passed a certain subject at 1st Class level, or to go on an overseas camp the cadet must have their Leading qualification.

Cadets are automatically enroled onto our BTEC qualification attained by successful completion of our syllabus.

Pilot Training

The First Class Classification

When a cadet joins the squadron they automatically become a Second Class Cadet. Over about 4-6 months they are trained on various subjects and must pass an exam. Subjects include: The Airfield, Map Reading, The ATC, The RAF, The Rifle, First Aid and others.

Once a cadet has passed they will be awarded with a badge and certificate. They will now be eligible for flying and gliding, annual camps and certain squadron run courses.

Leadership Training

Leading Cadet Classification

First Class cadets can train to achieve the Leading Cadet Classification. At this stage the subjects become more technical. The 344 (Fulham) Squadron leading training program includes: Aircraft Knowledge, Basic Navigation and Principles Of Flight.

After achieving the Leading Cadet Classification, cadets are now qualified to attend a gliding course, overseas camps and are eligible for promotion to the rank of Cadet Corporal.

Leadership Training - ATC

Senior Cadet Classification

Leading Cadets move onto extend their aeronautical studies by studying the Senior Cadet Classification training program. On this course they move on to an even higher technical program with the topics Propulsion and Airmanship.

After passing the Senior Cadet exam cadets are now eligible for the Rank of Cadet Sergeant or Flight Sergeant.

Adventure Training

Staff Cadet Classification

Duration: 6 Months.

To become a Staff Cadet, cadets must be over the age of 15 years and 6 months. Yet again the standards of technical training are raised and include the topics Aircraft Operations and Airframes. Cadets are also required to pass an interview with a Squadron Leader who will come to the unit to assess the cadets ability on being an active member of staff. Cadets will be tested on their knowledge of the ATC and how it is run, their knowledge of their own squadron and will also be observed whilst teaching a class.

After passing the Staff Cadet Classification cadets are now able to join a Gliding School and act as a junior member of staff and be promoted to the rank of Cadet Warrant Officer.
